    Hey guys!

So before I try to get a hosting account with you, I am planning on buying a new pretty domain name (one of those newfangled pretty TLDs). My question is simply how do you go about verifying ownership of domain? Thanks a lot, I'm pretty grateful that this exists. If everything goes well I definitely plan to upgrade. I love technology :)

    Thanks!

    Hi,

The WHOIS information will usually have your information in it. If it's hidden, there are other means we can use, like having you upload a text file, change a DNS setting, etc.

Sometimes if you're not suspicious, we just trust you! :D :D

I plan on registering through DreamHost, who defaults to private registration. And I do not plan to get any hosting from them, I have something better in mind haha! I suppose we'll just see when the time comes. I plan to register tonight and apply tonight or tomorrow. I'm giddy like a kid in a candy shop!

    Thanks Bryan

Already impressed, extremely quick account creation and the speed of the server - wow.

Just out of interest - why did you decide to use a hosting company, rather than a domain name registrar to register your name?

In all honesty - price. They were the best combination of cheap/reputable (and reasonable renewal fees) I could find. Granted, I probably could have searched harder

They only charged $2.95 for a .online domain. That's it. No extra fees, nothing. I was pretty pleased with that. I was thinking about transferring to NameSilo when it's time to renew, any thoughts?

EDIT: Wow, I just found Porkbun... wish I'd seen that lol. Oh well. That's probably where I'll head.

Online would have cost you $2,29 with my dollar off promo offer if you had used NameSilo.

renewals are on special offer at the moment, and that might be a bad sign. I'm not sure how popular online is as a tld.

Oh, what is your promo code? I may register another domain in a short while and $1 off sounds great! Haha.

Yeah, I noticed that. I was interested in .tech, but it was already taken for the domain I wanted. Since I was paying attention 2 years ago I feel like there's been an explosion of TLDs. Either that or they've always been around and I was oblivious.

I've got a couple, but SECURE is probably the easiest to use.

I dropped or sold nearly all of my domains with new extensions. The only one I kept is English.Gold All of my other names are .coms now. Well I've got a few .nets that I need to sell.

What's the specific reason you decided to drop them?

They weren't getting traffic, and they weren't selling. The renewal costs were too high as well. I felt that if I could pick up a decent .com for less than the renewal fee, then I was better off with the .com.

Ya know I kinda wonder why it is that when I see .net, .biz or other such TLDs I always look at them as... second rate. I wonder how .com became the de-facto. I'm too young to know first hand! :D

Ha ha!! Back in the day, .com was supposed to be reserved for commercial businesses, hence the .com[mercial]. .net was reserved for network and internet related sites, and .org for non-profit organizations. .edu was 4 year accredited colleges, and .gov for government use. Those were really the only extensions. There were no others back there. On my hosting company website, I am kicking myself, because like an idiot, I went with the .net, like I was supposed to. The .com was available, but it really went against the spirit of the domain extensions. Kicking myself now! ha ha!
